Travel through History w/ AMARA (Sat 2-3:30pm) more info Amara presents the history of Middle Eastern dance in the United States. In order to understand different ways fusion and tradition are produced, she will analyze power dynamic among various practitioners of this dance, such as members of diaspora communities who use dance to maintain cultural ties to a homeland, immigrants who adapt their dance to accommodate new situations, and people who practice a dance form that is not of their ancestral background. Through this investigation, Amara encourages dancers to think about and question their own positions within debates such as: what is American Middle Eastern dance? With over 30 successful events since 1996, Bahaia has now "passed the torch" of ABDC to fellow Austin dancer, Stacey Lizette, so that the tradition of master level instruction and high quality personal service can continue. Bahaia will remain active in the belly dance community, supporting The Austin Belly Dance Convention as well as producing Cabaret Dance Camp, aka "CAMPARET", every year in October.
